How to Get Injection-Molded Parts Fast Without a Price Shock: A 7-Step Checklist

In March 2024, a client emailed me at 6:42 PM on a Tuesday. They needed 500 injection-molded parts in hand by Thursday morning for an investor demo that would make or break their funding round. Normal lead time for an aluminum mold? Twelve to fifteen days. We delivered with about nine hours to spare—and not one surprise charge showed up on the invoice.

I'm telling you this because that last part is the one that doesn't come across as normal to most people. In my role coordinating rapid-response manufacturing for a product design firm, I've handled 200+ rush orders in the last five years. I've paid $800 in same-day shuttle fees, lost a $50,000 contract because a vendor missed a deadline, and learned to treat hidden fees as schedule-killers. What survived all of that is this checklist.

It's for engineers, buyers, and project managers who need parts faster than the standard lead time. Seven steps, with a checkpoint at the end of each one. Do them in order.

Step 1: Fix the file before you upload it

The fastest way to slow down an injection molding order is a CAD file that can't actually be molded. I've watched this cost more deadlines than any other single mistake: no draft angle, wall thickness jumping from 2 mm to 6 mm in one section, internal corners so sharp the tool steel might crack on the first pull.

So run a design-for-manufacturability (DFM) check before you think about quotes. When you upload a part to the Fictiv website, the platform generates a DFM sheet automatically. It flags wall thickness, draft, tolerances, and other issues. That sheet often goes unread. Don't let that be you. Clearing every red flag at this stage buys you days later.

Checkpoint: zero critical DFM warnings. If you can't fix them all, ask someone now. That's the cheapest 20 minutes of the entire project.

Step 2: Ask what's NOT included in the price

I've learned to ask "what's not included" before I ask "what's the price." A vendor once quoted me a base price 30% below everyone else. The final invoice ended up 12% higher than the next bid, after they added setup, de-burring, inspection paperwork, and an "expedite" fee I never agreed to. That was in April 2023, and it's the reason I now check every quote line by line.

The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even when the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

Step 3: Choose the process based on quantity, not habit

Engineers default to injection molding because it's the "real" manufacturing process. But if you need 10 parts instead of 10,000, the tooling cost alone will crush you, and the three-to-four-week mold-making lead time will kill your deadline.

Quick primer: CNC machining cuts parts from solid blocks using a rotating tool called a milling cutter. That's the right call for tight tolerances, metal parts, and quantities too small to justify a mold. 3D printing builds parts layer by layer, which is faster but more limited in material and surface finish.

The three processes complement each other. I've prototyped custom heat exchanger parts with complex internal lattice structures on a 3D printer—the same design direction Alfa Laval has been exploring in additive manufacturing heat exchanger research—and then moved the same geometry into CNC for production quantities.

Checkpoint: the quantity justifies the process. Under 50 units? Chances are you don't need a mold. At 500 or more, injection molding starts to win. Set your threshold before you quote.

Step 4: Choose material for the operating environment, not the last project

Material selection is where a lot of rush orders stall. Teams pick ABS because that's what they used in the last project, without checking whether the part needs flame retardancy, chemical resistance, or a specific heat deflection temperature.

One example: a medical-device client builds a CO2 laser device used for chest procedures. We were ready to quote a standard PC/ABS blend when they mentioned the device would need a flame-retardant rating for an upcoming certification. That one change added a day of material validation—but catching it before the mold cut saved a failed compliance test months later.

On Fictiv's platform, the material selector shows what's available with real lead time attached. If the material you want isn't in stock, you'll see the delay immediately. Use that info.

Step 5: Lock lead time, color, and tooling in the same conversation

Standard lead time for an aluminum injection molding tool on Fictiv is around 10–15 days. Expedited options exist, and they cost more—but you should see that cost in the quote upfront.

Here's what people forget: "lead time" often means parts are done, not parts in your hand. And any color change after the tool starts cutting resets the clock. For a brand-color part, reference a Pantone number. The rule of thumb I use is Delta E under 2 for a color-critical match, but with molded plastic, the tinting system and surface finish shift the outcome. So order a molded sample if color matters.

Checkpoint: the quote lists a separate date for "parts complete" and another for "in stock at your dock." If there's only one date, ask for the delivery date at your dock before you commit.

Step 6: Split manufacturing time from shipping time

This is the step a lot of buyers ignore. On a rush order, the part being done means nothing until it's physically in your building.

I learned this the hard way. We once booked a 12-day lead time and planned assembly for day 14. The parts were finished on day 11, then sat at the loading dock waiting for outbound inspection. Not a truck delay—an inspection nobody mentioned. We lost two days waiting.

Now I pull the shipping estimate into the Fictiv order summary during quoting and add expedited freight as an explicit line item. It's an extra cost, and that's fine. You just need to see it before the invoice, not after.

Checkpoint: the delivery date at the bottom of the quote includes transit. If it doesn't, ask for the breakdown before paying.

Step 7: Freeze the design after you hit order

I've had a client "just tweak" a dimension twenty minutes after the order went in. In injection molding, every tweak restarts the DFM check, the quote, and the tooling lead time. That's a two-to-three-week reset.

Uploading a new file to Fictiv generates a new revision with a new schedule. So if you're in a rush, stay frozen. Get the part right before you submit, set a revision freeze date, and make sure everyone on the team knows it. Any change after that goes through one gate only: the project manager who can weigh the cost in days.

Common Mistakes That Turn Rush Orders Into Failures

Choosing the lowest base price without reading line items. We did this in April 2023, and a $3,000 order ended up costing $5,200 plus a missed client deadline. The $800 we saved on the base price put a $12,000 relationship at risk.

Not checking material availability. If your resin is out of stock, a delay won't be announced—you'll just find out when the date slips. Ask upfront.

Starting late in the day. A 9 AM order can start production a full shift before a 5 PM order. On a tight deadline, that's everything.

Does This Checklist Work for Everyone?

This approach works for us because we're a mid-size product design firm with repeat volume and consistent ordering patterns. If you're a startup ordering a single prototype, the calculus is different—you might not need to freeze revisions or negotiate shipping windows at all. And if you're dealing with international logistics, there are factors I don't have visibility into.

But for domestic rush orders, these seven steps have carried us through 200+ of them. The core principle is simple: work with vendors who show all costs and all timeframes on the same screen, and make every decision before the clock starts. That's what gets parts delivered fast without a price shock.
