Fictiv CNC Machining: A Rush-Order Checklist for Small Batches
The phrase “I need it by Friday” has caused more than a few expensive lessons in my career. Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with a 95% on-time delivery rate. In my role coordinating manufacturing for a product development firm, I’ve handled 200+ rush orders in 8 years, and I’ve learned that most rush problems aren’t solved on the machine. They’re solved in the first ten minutes after a client says the words.
If you’re evaluating Fictiv CNC machining for a small order, this checklist is the one I run through when time is short. It’s written for engineers, procurement folks, and founders who need parts now, not for someone looking for a generic CNC tutorial.
Had two hours to decide before the deadline for rush processing. Normally I’d get multiple quotes, but there was no time. Went with our usual platform based on trust alone. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the timeline. But with a CEO waiting, I made the call with incomplete information.
Don’t let that be you. Here are the seven steps.
The 7-Step Checklist
- Complete the Fictiv login before the emergency starts.
Set up your account, verify your email, add a shipping address, and confirm who has access. Do this when you’re calm, not when a design review runs over and someone has already booked the event space. In March 2024, a client couldn’t access their order history because the Fictiv login was tied to a former employee’s mailbox. Fixing that took longer than the actual machining.
Why does this matter? Because a CNC quote can take minutes, but a locked account can take days to resolve.
- Confirm the process: CNC machining, 3D printing, or laser cutting.
Not every part with tight dimensions needs CNC. Fictiv offers CNC machining, injection molding, and 3D printing. A bracket with thin walls may be faster in 3D printing. A flat sheet with holes and slots can be cut faster and cheaper with a laser—especially if your local shop runs a Linux laser cutter software stack. LightBurn, for example, has a Linux version and handles 2D cut files reliably.
Don’t default to CNC because that’s what you always do. The question isn’t whether a CNC machine can make it. The question is whether the setup time fits your deadline.
- Upload a manufacturable CAD file, not a render.
A STEP file is usually the safest export for Fictiv CNC machining. STL files can work, but they lack the surface topology needed for a clean DFM review. I still kick myself for uploading an STL on one of our first prototype orders. The quote came back with questions about draft angles and internal radii that I could have answered in seconds if I’d sent a STEP file.
Medical device teams, take note: if you’re rushing a component for a regulated product—say, a CO2 fractional laser vaginal handpiece—the machining is rarely the critical path. Sterilization validation, labeling, and supplier documentation will take longer than the actual part. I’d rather get a DFM note from the platform than discover a tool-access problem after parts are coated.
- Pick a material from the fast list, not the full catalog.
As of January 2025, common materials like 6061 aluminum and 12L14 carbon steel are easier to source quickly than exotics. The quote tool shows available materials; if you’re in a hurry, choose from the options already on the shelf. A $150 material change can turn a 5-day lead time into a 12-day lead time.
The lowest quoted price is not the lowest total cost. The price difference between a standard aluminum and an exotic alloy means nothing if the exotic alloy arrives after your deadline.
- Know your tool geometry: Ball End Mill vs Flat End Mill.
This is the step that turns a smooth quote into a long email thread.
- A flat end mill (sometimes called a square end mill) cuts a flat bottom and a sharp bottom edge. It’s the right choice for slots, keyways, shoulders, and prismatic features.
- A ball end mill has a rounded tip. It leaves a radius on bottom corners and is the better choice for 3D contours, fillet transitions, and mold-like surfaces.
If your design has a flat-bottom pocket, a flat end mill will usually be on the quote. If you’re machining a sculpted grip or a curved cavity, expect a ball end mill. The ball end mill vs flat end mill decision also affects surface finish and tool cost. If your part allows a small internal radius, don’t design for 0.0 mm. That tiny change can save a tool change.
One more thing: no rotating end mill leaves a perfectly square internal corner in a pocket. The XY corner radius will match the tool radius. If your drawing calls for a square internal pocket corner, expect a tool change or a different process. That’s the kind of detail that delays quotes.
- Read the DFM feedback like a contract, not a suggestion.
The quote tool will flag features that are difficult or impossible to machine. Read those notes before you approve. Approving a quote without reading the DFM is one of those decisions I still second-guess. Hit “confirm” and immediately thought: did I make the right call? Didn’t relax until the delivery arrived on time and correct.
If you need a guaranteed timeline, request it before you commit. The value of a guaranteed turnaround is the certainty, not just the speed. For event materials, knowing your deadline will be met is often worth more than a lower price with “estimated” delivery. Rush fees are annoying, but rework after a missed deadline is worse.
- Plan for the last mile and the worst case.
Quote lead time is not delivery time. A CNC part can be done in 3 days and then sit in a freight depot for 2 more. If the deadline is absolute, build in a 48-hour buffer. Our company policy now requires a 48-hour buffer because of what happened in 2023: a part arrived at the depot on time and then sat for 24 hours because the receiving dock was closed. Not the shop’s fault. Our problem.
For one client in March 2024, missing that deadline would have meant a $50,000 penalty clause. The $800 rush fee looked cheap afterward.
Common Mistakes That Turn Small Orders Into Long Ones
- Your Fictiv login is tied to an old email you can’t access. Fix it before you need it.
- Uploading a native CAD file format only. Export a STEP file.
- Designing an internal square corner where a small radius is acceptable.
- Ignoring DFM flags because you’re in a hurry.
- Counting machine lead time but forgetting freight and receiving hours.
Small orders deserve the same attention as large ones. Some suppliers treat a $200 order like a nuisance; Fictiv’s platform doesn’t. The vendors who treated my first small orders seriously are the ones I trust with larger production runs now. Small doesn’t mean unimportant—it means potential.
The most frustrating part of rush work isn’t the machines. It’s the information gap between what the designer knows and what the model says. You’d think written specs would prevent misunderstandings, but interpretation varies wildly. The more information you give the quote tool, the better your chances of getting a part right the first time.
Not ideal, but workable. That’s the mindset for rush manufacturing. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to be true enough to the model, and delivered before the deadline disappears.
