After a $3,100 Hidden-Fee Mistake, I Switched to Fictiv CNC Machining

I believe a quote that hides costs is not a quote. It is an invitation to discover the real price later. That sounds obvious, but I spent years doing the opposite: comparing unit prices, ignoring missing line items, and telling myself the more detailed quote was “expensive.” In March 2024, that habit cost me about $3,100 of wasted budget. It also pushed me toward a different way of sourcing custom parts. I still use Fictiv for many CNC machining orders, but not because it always gives the lowest number. I use it because the quoting process forces transparency—and transparency is the only honest way to compare manufacturing options.

Background: I have been placing custom manufacturing orders since 2017 and currently maintain the pre-order checklist for our small hardware team. This is not a polished sales piece. It is the reasoning behind the checklist, written down so the next engineer does not have to pay the same tuition.

The trigger was a 240-piece aluminum machining order in March 2024. One supplier sent a line-item quote that included material cert, anodize, deburring, inspection, packaging, and shipping. Another supplier sent a lower per-part price with a one-line note: “price per drawing.” I approved the second one because it looked like I was saving $1,200. The final cost, after separate charges for the missing categories plus an expedited shipment, was about $3,100 more than the transparent quote. Did that second shop intend to deceive me? I don't think so. They quoted what I asked for, and I asked for a price instead of a complete cost model. That mistake is mine.

That week, I built the quote-review checklist we still use.

The problem with judging by unit price

Hidden fees in machining rarely appear as line items named “gotcha.” They appear as separate charges for work that a complete quote should have included. Material certificates. Outside anodizing. Deburring. A first article inspection report. Foam, edge protectors, and boxes for parts that should not arrive scratched. Each add-on is small; together they can turn a low quote into a high invoice. Low unit price is not low total cost unless every other cost is visible.

We did not have a formal quote review process before that order. My approval was based on “this number is lower than the other one.” That is exactly how hidden costs hide. Now I ask one question before asking the price: “What's not included?” If the supplier cannot answer without a long pause, I treat the quote as incomplete.

According to FTC Business Guidance (ftc.gov), advertising claims must be truthful and not misleading. I am not a lawyer, but I think a manufacturing quote should meet the same standard. A quote that omits significant costs may not be an intentional lie, but it is misleading when presented as the expected total.

What Fictiv CNC machining does differently

I didn't switch to Fictiv because I think any company deserves blind loyalty. I switched because Fictiv machining made my assumptions visible. When I first used Fictiv CNC machining, I was skeptical of the instant-quote model. The surprise was not that the quote was different from a traditional email quote. The surprise was that I could see what changed the cost: material, finish, quantity, tolerance, and lead time. A number without those variables is not a quote; it is a guess wearing a suit.

The design feedback was another part of it. If my part has a manufacturability concern, I want to know before spending money. Again, I am not claiming every Fictiv order is perfect. I am claiming the system creates a paper trail: revision, reviews, quote, order status, and delivery all live in the same place. That is worth more than a $300 discount on a quote I cannot fully understand.

The same gap shows up in 3D printing and laser cutting

The under-cost problem is not limited to CNC shops. I hear the same logic in simple questions about desktop manufacturing equipment. People search “most common nozzle size for fdm 3d printers.” The answer is 0.4 mm for most FDM printers. But the hidden part is that nozzle size is only one variable. A low-quality spool of filament can have inconsistent diameter, moisture, or debris that ruins a print and clogs that 0.4 mm nozzle. The spare nozzle is cheap; the wasted evening is not.

That connects to the next frequent question: “how much are filaments for 3d printers?” There is no fixed answer. As a general reference, standard PLA is often in the $20–30 per kilogram range, PETG is often $25–35, and engineering materials such as nylon or polycarbonate can cost $50 or more. Actual pricing changes by brand, seller, and date. The better question is what a successful printed part costs. A bargain spool that makes three failed prints is not cheaper than a consistent spool that makes one good part.

The same problem appears in laser cutting listings. If a machine is advertised as a “40w laser cutter for metal,” the first question is not power; it is laser type. A 40 W CO2 laser can mark or engrave coated metal, but it is not the right tool for cutting structural steel or thicker aluminum. A fiber laser is a different category and usually a different price. A listing that hides the laser source is the hardware version of a quote with missing line items. What is excluded matters as much as what is included.

What about the “instant quote is just marketing” objection?

I can hear the objection: transparent quoting does not guarantee part quality. True. I don't want a guarantee of perfection; I want a clear process for handling imperfection. If a part arrives out of tolerance, both sides need to know what tolerance was quoted. That is difficult when the only record is a one-line email and a purchase order number.

Another objection is that the buyer should ask better questions. I agree, but only partly. Asking the right questions matters. Yet a supplier who presents only the flattering part of the price is making the buyer do adversarial work. A good quote is a collaborative tool. It should say what will be made, from what, with which finish, in what time, and at what total price. Anything less is not engineering clarity—it is sales friction.

My bottom line

I still choose lower-priced suppliers when their quotes are complete and their exclusions are clear. I also choose Fictiv when its platform fits the part. There is no contradiction. Both decisions follow the same rule: the supplier who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end.

My final advice is short. Stop asking only “What is the price?” Start asking “What's not included?” before discussing discounts or delivery. That single question would have saved me $3,100 in March 2024. It may save you a lot more.
